USS Cobia Returns to Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Brandon Reid (Manitowoc Herald Times) | Published on 10/22/2025

MANITOWOC – USS Cobia is home.

The World War II submarine that was built in 1943 in Connecticut and completed six war patrols returned Oct. 15 to its resting place since 1970 alongside the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.

Cobia spent more than a month in dry dock at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay having left the Manitowoc harbor and traveled through Lake Michigan with a tugboat Sept. 7 to undergo repairs and restoration work.

The submarine left Sturgeon Bay around 7 a.m. Oct. 15 and returned to Manitowoc around 2 p.m.

While the Cobia is back in Manitowoc, it will not be ready for public tours for a couple days. Kevin Cullen, Wisconsin Maritime Museum executive director, said Oct. 15 Cobia will be ready for tours "as soon as Saturday," Oct. 18.

Wisconsin Maritime Museum had raised $1.5 million for the dry docking project, including a $500,000 grant from the state of Wisconsin. The submarine was last dry docked in 1996.

The museum at 75 Maritime Drive in downtown Manitowoc is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
