Presented by the UW Naval ROTC Alumni Association. In honor of Lieutenant Commander John S. Lyman, who received his commission in 1953 from the University of Wisconsin NROTC and served as the Engineer Officer aboard the USS THRESHER (SSN 593). LCDR Lyman was lost at sea when THRESHER failed to surface on 10 April, 1963.

Captain John W. “Swede” Peterson Memorial Award

In memory of Captain John W. “Swede” Peterson, USN, August 20, 1944 - April 9, 2009, Professor of Naval Science, UW NROTC 1994 - 1997. CAPT Peterson was an aviator who went on to become a Commanding Officer of USS St. Louis, group commander of Amphibious Group Three, and ended his 30-year career as the Commanding Officer at the University of Wisconsin NROTC Unit. Awarded annually to future officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps who demonstrate exemplary character and ethics, qualities that John held dear in those around him.
