Lieutenant Commander John S. Lyman Merit Scholarship

Presented by the UW Naval ROTC Alumni Association. In honor of Lieutenant Commander John S. Lyman, who received his commission in 1953 from the University of Wisconsin NROTC and served as the Engineer Officer aboard the USS THRESHER (SSN 593). LCDR Lyman was lost at sea when THRESHER failed to surface on 10 April, 1963.

Professor of Naval Science Freshman Spirit Award

Professor of Naval Science Freshman Spirit Award in Memory of Lieutenant Junior Grade Erdman (Erd) H. Pankow for Excellence, Enthusiasm and Participation in activities of the Battalion of Midshipmen, Naval ROTC, University of Wisconsin. Lieutenant JG Erdman Pankow received his commission as an aviator prior to WWII, flew patrol aircraft in the South Pacific during the war, and was a long time supporter of the Badger Battalion.

The selected recipient exhibits a combination of scholastic achievement, personal leadership, sociability, community involvement and financial need. In Memory of Major Norman K. Billipp, USMC, Class of 1966, Battalion Commander, A-4 Pilot, Missing in Action - Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam, 6 May 1969. This award was established in 2021 by a Ross M. and Michele M. Annable Foundation endowment which ensures an award at a present-day value of $2,500 in perpetuity. The award honors a classmate.

Presented to a 1st Class Midshipmen designated as a Marine Option graduating in the award year (May through December) and recommended by the Marine Officer Instructor are eligible for the award. Additional considerations include their participation in the Badger Battalion. The award was established in 2022 by Bill Kirkpatrick. Bill, graduated from UW-Madison in 1989 and is a part of a multigenerational family of Badgers.
The award, which includes a sword, is given during the annual NROTC Awards Ceremony by a Kirkpatrick or Dinauer family member if possible.

In Memory of Lieutenant Junior Grade D.N. “Nick” Norris, USN, a 1961 graduate and former Battalion Commander of this unit who was lost at sea in a night landing crash of his jet fighter on 4 November 1964. Captain John W. “Swede” Peterson Memorial Award

In memory of Captain John W. “Swede” Peterson, USN, August 20, 1944 - April 9, 2009, Professor of Naval Science, UW NROTC 1994 - 1997. CAPT Peterson was an aviator who went on to become a Commanding Officer of USS St. Louis, group commander of Amphibious Group Three, and ended his 30-year career as the Commanding Officer at the University of Wisconsin NROTC Unit. Awarded annually to future officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps who demonstrate exemplary character and ethics, qualities that John held dear in those around him.
